[HOW TO] Install Synapse (file launcher) in Xubuntu

Update 07/01/2015   Synapse is no longer officially maintained (it's not even available on Ubuntu repositories since version 14.04) so its stability is not assured.

Synapse is a semantic launcher written in Vala that you can use to start applications as well as find and access relevant documents and files by making use of the Zeitgeist engine.

Synapse running on Xubuntu 12.04. Start typing the name of the application you want to run and Synapse will try to auto-complete and will launch it when you hit return.

Install

Open a terminal window and run:

sudo apt-get install synapse -y

Usage

Synapse can be accessed via Applications Menu > Accessories > Synapse or typing the following command: synapse.

Synapse runs on the background and can be activated using the keyboard combination Ctrl+Space. This combination and other settings (like add to startup) and be altered accessing the preferences dialog:

    Does Synapse still work with Xubuntu? On my machine, it crashes every time.

      Hi Beni, it seems that Synapse were very buggy and therefore was removed from the official repositories and is no longer officially maintained.
      I looked for alternatives and found kupfer and seems great, soon I'll write about it.

[FIX] VLC is unable to open the MRL (smb://)

When I tried to open remote video files with VLC via a Samba share I got this error message: Your input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'smb://...' It seems that this problem is related to credentials and can be fixed by entering the credentials for the Samba share in the VLC preferences (Tools > Preferences > Input / Codecs > Access Modules > SMB Input): Note: I only experienced this problem when accessing remote files with PCManFM. Add items to Xfce Applications Menu

To add an application launcher to Xfce Applications Menu is simple; all you have to do is place the *.desktop file that launches the application in the right folder. Create the *.desktop file Create a text file whose extension is 'desktop', with the following content: [Desktop Entry] Version=1.0 Type=Application Name= ItemName Exec= Command Icon= IconFile Categories= Category ; On ItemName write the name that should be displayed on the menu.
